The Diocesan Cemetery topic serves as the central resource for diocesan leadership, fiscal managers, and cemetery directors who carry responsibility for the stewardship of Catholic burial grounds. Its purpose is to offer formation, structure, and practical guidance drawn from decades of national experience in evaluating, strengthening, and supporting diocesan cemetery systems. This topic introduces the core publications that shape effective governance and leadership in Catholic cemetery ministry.

For more than 35 we have conducted on site evaluations of over twenty diocesan and
archdiocesan cemetery programs throughout the United States. These visits have included comprehensive reviews of operations, administration, fiscal management, pastoral practice, and long term planning. Each engagement produced detailed documentation of issues, written reports identifying root causes, and clear recommendations to remedy deficiencies and strengthen leadership.

In many instances, we were also charged with hiring and training new directors, guiding them through the complexities of cemetery ministry, and supporting them as they assumed responsibility for programs that often required significant renewal.

A consistent reality emerged across these decades of work. The individuals most often
responsible for supervising diocesan cemetery directors are fiscal managers who serve the diocese well in their own professional sphere but have little or no in depth understanding of Catholic cemetery ministry. They are asked to oversee directors, evaluate performance, and ensure compliance without the benefit of formation in the unique pastoral, operational, and theological dimensions of cemetery work.
The publications presented in this section were created precisely to meet that need. They equip supervisors and directors alike with the structure, clarity, and practical knowledge required to lead diocesan cemetery programs with competence and confidence.

Two major bodies of work are presented. The first is the Diocesan Cemetery Program
Supervisory Handbook, the primary resource for diocesan fiscal managers and other supervisors who oversee cemetery leadership. The second is the set of 8 Discipline Manuals that form the foundation for leadership in diocesan cemeteries. Together, these publications offer a comprehensive framework for governance, pastoral practice,  perational excellence, and long term sustainability.
